IELTS Scoring in Detail

Understand how IELTS is scored and what your band score means

How IELTS is Scored

IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale. You will receive a score for each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and an Overall Band Score. The scores are designed to reflect your English language proficiency level, from non-user (Band 1) to expert user (Band 9).

Did You Know? There is no pass or fail in IELTS. Your score simply reflects your English ability level, and different organizations require different band scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the overall band score calculated?
The overall band score is the average of the four individual section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band. For example: (6.5 + 6.5 + 5.0 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 6.25, which rounds to 6.5.
What's the difference between Academic and General Training Reading scoring?
The Reading section has different scoring scales for Academic and General Training because the texts are different. General Training requires more correct answers to achieve the same band score since the texts are generally easier.
How is the Writing test scored?
The Writing test is assessed by certified examiners based on four criteria: Task Achievement (25%), Coherence & Cohesion (25%), Lexical Resource (25%), and Grammatical Range & Accuracy (25%). Each criterion is scored on a 9-band scale.
Can I get my IELTS test remarked?
Yes, you can apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR) within 6 weeks of your test date. There is a fee, which is refunded if your score changes. The remarking process takes 2-21 days.
How long does it take to get IELTS results?
Computer-delivered IELTS: Results available in 3-5 days. Paper-based IELTS: Results available in 13 days. You can view your results online and receive a Test Report Form (TRF) by mail.
